The Austrian national team has ruled out a comeback of Steven Strong at the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship after sustaining a severe knee injury during its first game against Switzerland.

Strong’s knee was hit by Swiss player Sven Andrighetto, who was assessed a match penalty and will be suspended for today’s game against Slovakia.

The 25-year-old, who grew up in Villach while his father played there before moving to Canada when he was five and returning to Austria in 2015, suffered multiple ligament ruptures.

Austria today registered another defenceman with Patrick Peter of the Vienna Capitals and has now registered three goaltenders and 21 skaters leaving one roster spot open for an additional skater.

The team expects Philadelphia Flyers forward Michael Raffl to arrive in Copenhagen today and play for the team as of next week.
