Less than two weeks before the first puck drop at the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, the tournament organizing committee presented the gold, silver and bronze medals. All 16 national ice hockey teams will fight for the medals from 21 May to 6 June in Riga, Latvia.
The official logo of the championship - a hockey player on the background of a stylized hockey field - is shown in the design. The theme of the logo continues around the perimeter of the medal. The text IIHF ICE HOCKEY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP and the host country and city - RIGA LATVIA - is stated on the outer edge of the medals.
“We wanted to use a strong and clear hockey symbol in the medal design and we are very satisfied with the result. We have also not forgotten about the national symbol of Latvia, the host country, and it will be presented in the ribbons," said Edgars Buncis, the head of the organizing committee.
The design of the medals was developed in close cooperation with the Latvian Coin House (Latvijas Monētu nams). Like the entire organization process of this championship, the medal design was created in a very short period of time. Usually it takes months, but this year it had to be done in a couple of weeks.
"It was a great honour for our company to design the medals of the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Although designing and producing coins and medals is our business and what we do every day, this project was a big challenge - especially because of the very limited deadlines. Great efforts were made to create the design of these beautiful medals, their production and timely delivery. We are more than satisfied with the result! We are sure that the athletes will like them as well," commented Gints Rijnieks, the Marketing Manager of the Latvian Coin House.
The Latvian Coin House has entrusted the minting of official medals to the mint in Norway, where also the Nobel Peace Prize medal was minted. The medals of this year's IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will stand out with a special large diameter - 10 cm, with the weight for the medal being more than 400 grams.
"The medal ceremony and receiving the trophy is one of the most emotional moments at every sport tournament," said Buncis. "After 17 days and 64 games, we will find out which national teams will bring these medals home. Let the best win!"
The 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship medals will be awarded on 6 June when the best teams will play in the gold and bronze medal games at Arena Riga.
Arena Riga, which was built for the 2006 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship and is home to the KHL team Dinamo Riga, will be the main venue and host Group B, two quarter-final games (including Latvia’s game if qualified), the semi-finals and medal games.
The Olympic Sports Centre across the street will be converted into an ice arena to host Group A and two quarter-final games.
