The 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship Ad Hoc Disciplinary Panel has issued a one-game suspension against Finnish player Ronja Savolainen.

Savolainen was assessed a minor penalty at 7:26 of the second period during today’s Finland-Hungary game when she hit her opponent Zsofia Pazmandi to the head and neck area.

A formal hearing was held today in which the player explained that she went up trying to lessen the impact of the collision with the opposing player when receiving the puck.

The Disciplinary Panel determined that Savolainen saw Pazmandi prior to making contact, extended her shoulder upward when making direct contact with her opponent’s head, that the player’s action was unnecessary, recklessly endangered the opposing player and violated Official Playing Rule 48 (Illegal Check to the Head or Neck).

Therefore Savolainen will be sanctioned with a one-game suspension, specifically tomorrow’s game Finland vs. Japan.
