Edwards named MVP

Leila Edwards of the United States earned Most Valuable Player honors at the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship.

Edwards, who finished with eight points (four goals, four assists), was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

"I definitely wouldn't have gotten this without my teammates and coaches," Edwards said of the honors. "They supported me the whole tournament. A lot of them made me look good. I had fun because of them and I play my best hockey when I am having fun."

Czechia’s Adele Sapvalivova and Finland’s Sanni Vanhanen were the other forwards named to the squad. Canada's Sara Swiderski and the United States' Sydney Morrow were the top defenders. Emilia Kyrkko of Finland received top goaltender honors.

Sapvalivova finished second in tournament scoring with nine points (three goals, six assists) in five games, while Vanhanen posted six. Her hat trick on Monday keyed the Finns to their third bronze medal at this event.

Morrow led all defensemen with eight points (one goal, seven assists). Swiderski, who finished with a pair of assists and a team-high plus-six rating, also drew praise for two-way play and logging big minutes.

Kyrkko finished with two shutouts, inlcluding a 35-save effort in the bronze-medal game. She led all netminders with a 95.86 save percentage and a 1.51 goals-against average.
