The 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship held in Herning was named the Most Sustainable Event at the Host City Awards in Glasgow on December 2.
The award is given to the event that delivered measurable environmental and social impact according to rigid ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) accounting standards, judged on the event’s emissions, waste, and sourcing, as well as general community benefits such as accessibility and local engagement, and lasting sustainability legacies or practices.
"We are incredibly proud to win this award. It’s a testament to the way we organize events in Denmark through close cooperation, strong organization, and a shared focus on responsibility. It’s nice to get this award at a time when hockey is growing in Denmark, so it motivates us to work hard, develop the game, and lift it even further," says Peter Froulund, Director of the Danish Ice Hockey Union.
Herning hosted Group B of the preliminary round of the 2025 tournament, organized in partnership with the IIHF, the Danish Ice Hockey Association, the City of Herning, and Sport Event Denmark, a national sports event organization established and supported by the Danish government.
Sustainability was a given goal for the Herning organizers from the get-go.
“We see a unique opportunity [with the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship] to influence the sustainability agenda in sports and reach thousands of attendees both locally and internationally. Our commitment is not just in words but in tangible actions that will leave a legacy for future events,” Majken Skræddergaard Urup, Head of Hospitality & Sustainability at the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, said in November 2024.
“Denmark’s unique model of shared responsibility between national sports federations, host cities, and Sport Event Denmark makes it a frontrunner in advancing sustainable event practices. By prioritizing sustainability in major international sporting events, Denmark demonstrates how partnerships can elevate responsibility across the sports industry, setting a benchmark for future international sporting collaborations,” added Lars Lundov, CEO of Sport Event Denmark.
The Host City Awards are presented annually as part of the Host City Conference, which brings together international organizers and other actors in the business of hosting major sporting and cultural events.
The Host City Awards began in 2024 and celebrate excellence in hosting, delivering, and promoting major sports, business, and cultural events worldwide.
The award was accepted by Sport Event Denmark, the official nominee for the category.
