You can add the name Jacob Berglund to the pantheon of great achievements in Norwegian hockey. On Sunday, in his team’s 4-0 win over Slovenia, he scored three goals in the second period. No other player scored in the period, and this natural hat trick is unique in Norway’s hockey history.

In all, Norway has played in 256 World Championship games, from their first on February 17, 1937, up to Sunday’s important win. Over the decades, only 13 times before Berglund has a Norwegian scored three or more goals in a game. And of those 13, only one player—Bjorn Gulbrandsen in 1949—scored three in a period.

Indeed, Gulbrandsen scored four goals in the first period of his team’s 14-1 win over Belgium, and he added three more the rest of the game, making his seven goals an untouchable record in Norway's record book. But Ragnar Rygel also scored in that first period, meaning that the only player in Norway’s history to score the only three goals of a period is Berglund.

Pretty amazing.

Only twice have two players recorded a hat trick in the same game. The first time came on March 14, 1950, when Gulbrandsen scored four goals and Roar Pedersen scored three goals in an 11-0 win over France. Then, on March 11, 1962, Henrik Petersen and Bjorn Elvenes each scored three goals in a 12-2 win over Great Britain.

And only two other times has a Norwegian scored four goals in a game. Elvenes scored four on March 12, 1962, in a 7-5 win over Switzerland.

Most recently, on May 9, 2011, Marius Holtet scored four goals in a 5-2 win over France. Although they were four consecutive goals for Norway, they came over the course of all three periods and were interspersed with France’s goals.

There you have it. For goals in a game, Gulbrandsen has seven and three players have four. In all, 14 players have a hat trick, but no one had done what Berglund did yesterday.
