The 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship is introducing a reusable cup system across its venues as part of efforts to reduce waste and improve sustainability at the tournament.

All beverages served in the arenas are provided in reusable cups. The initiative is expected to prevent the use of an estimated 70,000–80,000 single-use cups during the Championship, reducing waste and the environmental impact associated with disposable packaging.

A deposit system is in operation, with fans paying €3 when purchasing a drink. The deposit is returned instantly to their payment card when the cup is brought back to designated return points located throughout the venues.

Three automated return stations are available at the Bratislava arena, one of which is equipped with two return slots and two payment terminals. A further five stations are located at the Trenčín arena, three of which also feature two return slots.

The return process is designed to be quick and accessible. No registration or mobile application is required. Automated return stations are designed to handle high volumes efficiently during games and peak periods, supporting a simple and convenient experience for spectators while helping to ensure that cups are collected and reused throughout the tournament.

During the Championship, an average of around 4,000 cups are returned each day across the venues.

The initiative forms part of the broader sustainability efforts of the International Ice Hockey Federation, which continues to promote responsible resource management and reduced environmental impact across its events. Similar measures are increasingly being implemented at international sporting events as part of wider sustainability efforts.
