Washington Capitals defender Martin Fehervary will join the Slovak men’s national team at the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.
“I’m looking forward to the guys and that I can help,” Fehervary said in a video message to Slovak hockey fans before his flight to Helsinki.

The 22-year-old Bratislava native spent the last three seasons in the Washington Capitals organization and had his breakthrough season in the NHL after having spent the first two years mostly with the AHL’s Hershey Bears. He played 79 regular-season games for Washington this season recording 8 goals and 9 assists. His +15 rating and the average ice time of 19:39 were third among all Caps defenders.
Fehervary has previously played in two IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships in 2018 and on home ice in 2019.
With the upcoming arrival of Fehervary it is expected that non-registered defender Martin Bucko will have to leave the team.
Once Fehervary will have been formally registered for the World Championship, the Slovak roster will include three goalkeepers, eight defender and 12 forward with open spots for two more skaters.
