The first semi-final game in the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship saw Eva-Lotta Nyman rewarded as Volunteer of the Game. Eva volunteers in the hotel information -team.

The team takes care of various tasks such as guidance and information, coordinating the IIHF Annual Congress, taking part in seminars, and a lot of things regarding transportation. The team started working when the tournament started. As we come to the final weekend of the tournament, work also gets busier for Eva’s team.

“We have to make sure the guests now when they are supposed to be leaving, and we have to know their destinations” Eva mentions as an example.

Eva also volunteered in last year’s tournament, and her first time volunteering was in 2012 when the men’s Ice Hockey Championship was last held in Finland. “Ice Hockey has always been interesting to me”, Eva tells us. “I happened to notice when they were looking for volunteers for the 2012 games. That’s where the idea came from, and I have never regretted it.”

Eva says that the best thing about volunteering in the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship is getting to spend time with different kinds of people, and how enriching it is to meet new people and get new experiences. “Last year was an amazing experience, and so far, this year has also been equally great”, Eva tells us.

In the second semi-final on Saturday, Justus Soukko, from the snow team, was awarded as the volunteer of the day. His duties include shovelling snow off the ice during commercial breaks and collecting pucks after teams’ warm-ups. In addition, the snow team is involved in the prize distribution by spreading the carpet on the ice and assisting in the flag raising.

Justus himself plays ice hockey in Seinäjoki S-Kiekko and was already volunteering last year’s IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. He ended up volunteering, when juniors in his team were asked to join the tournament.

Justus says that he has had a good time in Tampere, both this year and last year.

“It has been nice to see some old friends. Here you also get to know new people and make new friends. It’s been fun”, Justus sums up.
