The logo for the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, which will take place in St. Petersburg, was unveiled on Tuesday, 21 September 2021 at the Grand Hotel Europa in St. Petersburg. The second-largest city in Russia will host the event for the third time, the two previous ones being the 2000 and 2016 Worlds.
The logo was presented by IIHF President René Fasel, Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov, RIHF President Vladislav Tretyak, RIHF First Vice-President and national team GM Roman Rotenberg, RIHF Special Representative for International Affairs Pavel Bure and Vice Governor of St. Petersburg Boris Piotrovsky.
The World Championship logo was inspired by famous painting "Athletes" by the great Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, and is made in the style of Suprematism, one of the most influential movements in abstract art of the 20th century.
An unusual approach to graphics was chosen to emphasize the status of St. Petersburg as the cultural capital of Russia. Only few cities in the world can boast so many museums, galleries, theaters and historical sites.
“I’m so pleased that we can organize the next World Championship in St. Petersburg in 2023,” said Fasel. “It will be a great World Championship with a great organizer.”
Kazimir Malevich, a great Russian artist, lived in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). Suprematism is one of the most influential movements in abstract art in the 20th century. The structure of the Universe in Suprematism is expressed in simple geometric forms: a straight line, a rectangle, a circle, a square painted in a limited range of colors, signifying the infinity of space. The ideas of Suprematism, inspired by famous Malevich’s ‘Black Square’, were embodied in architecture, scenography, printing and industrial design.
“In the 2022/23 season, for the first time in history, both the Worlds and World Juniors will be held in Russia. Many thanks to the International Ice Hockey Federation for entrusting us to host these wonderful tournaments,” said Tretiak. “Russia will justify the confidence of the world hockey family. All tournaments will be held at the highest level. The IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will be the culmination of the hockey season.
“The largest arena in the world will be completed for the 2023 Worlds in St. Petersburg. Almost 22,000 spectators. The World Championship games will be a real treat.”
