IIHF Asia and Oceania events held in the region gives Asian and Oceania members who are not in the IIHF World Championship Program additional game experience in a competition format.
These events support the development of ice hockey in IIHF Member National Associations and are included in a year-round program of development activities required for international competitive showcases. The competitions are held based on the IIHF Sport Regulations as well as IIHF Player Eligibility and should be the last step towards participating in the IIHF World Championship Program.
While the program was initially most successful with the Men's Senior Category, recently the Men's U18 and Women's Senior categories have seen the largest growth and development.
In 2023, 18 Asian member national associations will be represented in the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship program at different levels with Kazakhstan, Korea, Japan, China, the United Arab Emirates, DPR Korea, Turkmenistan, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Hong Kong (China), Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Singapore, Malaysia, Kuwait, the Philippines, Mongolia and Indonesia planned to participate.
Asia and Oceania Championship
The IIHF Asia and Oceania Championship (formerly IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia) gives Asian and Oceania members that are not in the World Championship Program or that play in lower divisions or need additional game experiences a chance to compete. It shall also help develop hockey in Asia and Oceania rank the Asian teams in view of the seeding for the Asian Winter Games.
The first Challenge Cup of Asia was held in 2008 with six teams in Hong Kong. Since then the number of events has continuously grown and were held in various men’s, women’s and junior categories. In total, 33 events where held between 2008 and 2019 with a break in 2020 and 2021 due the Covid-19 pandemic.
