France will host the 2028 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship for the 3rd time in its history, following the 1951 and 2017 editions. The Accor Arena in Paris and the LDLC Arena in Lyon will host the world's 16 best teams from May 12 to 28, 2028.
This morning, at the IIHF Annual Congress, the vote of the International Ice Hockey Federation's members confirmed France's bid to host this international event.
“I'm very proud and pleased that the hockey family has placed its trust in us for this project, recognizing our capacity to organize such a large-scale event. As we head towards the 2030 Olympic Games, this event represents an exceptional opportunity to promote and develop our sport by capitalizing on our expertise and know-how,” declared Pierre-Yves Gerbeau, President of the French Hockey Federation.
Supported by the Keneo agency in the construction of the bid and the planning of the project, the technical details were presented to the General Assembly on 23 May by Éric Ropert, FFHG Managing Director. Philippe Lacarrière, FFHG Board member and IIHF Hall of Fame inductee, reminded the voting members of how far French hockey has come in recent decades. Finally, Cristobal Huet, event ambassador, had the opportunity to underline the importance of hosting a IIHF World Championship in Paris for future generations of hockey players.
France is set to host two major world competitions in which the French ice hockey teams are expected to shine: the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in May 2028 in Paris and Lyon, followed in all likelihood by the 2030 Winter Olympics in the Alps.
