Domestic Development
The IIHF Mission is the development of the game globally. However, that cannot be achieved unless the IIHF Member National Associations (MNA) do the work in their countries. Domestic Development refers to promoting or developing ice hockey nationally. However, the MNAs are not alone in this task as the IIHF provides a series of tools, resources and support to help with this work.
As illustrated below, the IIHF National Association Assessment and Development Program (IIHF NAAD) consists of three components: The National Association Organizational Assessment, the National Association Long-Term Development Plans, and the National Association Domestic Development Plans. These three components ensure sufficient and necessary justification, continuity, sustainability, and cost-efficiency in domestic development.
As illustrated below, the IIHF National Association Assessment and Development Program (IIHF NAAD) consists of three components: The National Association Organizational Assessment, the National Association Long-Term Development Plans, and the National Association Domestic Development Plans. National Association Organizational Assessment is a comprehensive analysis of the current state of the MNA which is to show the areas which function well and, respectively, the areas in need of improvement. Only an accurate assessment of the current situation can lead to efficient planning. The assessment aims to identify priorities which then feed the long-term planning.
National Association Long-Term Development Plans will ensure that all actions, investments, and initiatives are relevant, realistic and are addressing the specific needs of the association. The long-term plan also indicates the roles and responsibilities of the MNA, its clubs and the IIHF.
National Association Domestic Development Plans (DDP) are seasonal execution plans, addressing definite steps in the long-term plans. DDPs often are linked to a MNA’s participation in the IIHF Camps so that the persons executing the project have been educated by the IIHF. The DDPs can receive financial subsidies from the IIHF, covering 50% of the MNA’s costs up to a certain limit.
Since its launch in the 2013-14 season, the IIHF has supported over 120 projects around the world. These have addressed areas such as recruitment, coaching and coach development, youth development, school programs and other development areas, women’s hockey, officiating and organizational development.
